Sew a Ruby Top

In this 5-hour workshop, we will sew an easy summer top with gathers and a yoke using the Ruby sewing pattern (a size-inclusive pattern, up to 66" chest & 70" hip) designed by Rae H. Ruby is a great basic top for woven fabrics and fits comfortably without the need for bust darts, zippers, or closures. Rae will show you how to line the yoke, but if you prefer you may finish the armholes and neckline with a bias binding. This class will focus on construction rather than fitting, though there will be some time for fitting tips when you select your size in class. 

SKILL LEVEL: Beginner to Confident (ages 16+)

This is a great project if you have taken our How to Sew class and How to use a Pattern class and would like a beginner garment class. This is also a good choice if you've already sewn a few garments and are looking to expand your skillset. For this class you must be able to read a pattern, understand grain and seam allowance, sew a straight seam, and backtack.

DATES/TIMES: 

Saturday, August 1: 10 AM -12 PM, 1 PM - 3 PM

(5 hours of total instructional time, with a 1-hour break)

WHAT TO BRING:

Woven light to medium weight cotton or linen fabric such as lawn, voile, double gauze, yarn-dyed cottons, chambray, poplin, shirting, linen, or cotton-linen blends. Consider choosing a contrast fabric for the yoke. In the shop, we have Fableism or Merchant and Mills that would be great for this top! Prewash and press your fabric before class begins.

For exact fabric requirements, review the size chart and yardage on the pattern website. Note that you will need 1 yard of fabric for the yoke if you would like to line it as shown in the gingham shop sample.

Notions: Thread in matching color

Basic sewing kit: scissors, snips, seam ripper, pins, rulers, chalk (we also have these tools available to borrow in the studio)

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

Studio sewing machines are provided. You may bring your own machine if you prefer.

If you need to cancel, please contact the studio as soon as possible. Cancellations more than 3 days before the class starts will receive credit towards a future class. Cancellations less than 3 days are non-refundable. Each class must have at least three participants in order to run. Marengo Studio reserves the right to cancel this class if we do not have enough participants (you will be notified of a cancellation at least 48 hours ahead of the class start and may choose a full refund or credit towards a future class).
